The problem
Everyone argues about which jobs AI will reshape; almost nobody scores it transparently. Headlines swing between panic and dismissal because there is no comparable, traceable number behind the claims.
The approach
The AI Overlap Index (AOI) combines four weighted signals into a single 0-100 score per occupation: LLM-rated automation impact across the role’s actual tasks, importance-weighted (60%); the Karpathy/BLS Digital AI Exposure scale (10%); market pressure from BLS 2024-2034 employment projections (15%); and entry-barrier erosion (15%). Every score is traceable to its inputs - the site publishes the full methodology and disclaims prescriptive use: research output, not career advice.
Architecture & build
Per-task scoring runs on Claude Sonnet with premium narratives from Claude Opus; results render as an interactive treemap of all 342 occupations - tile size for exposure, color for one of five risk tiers from Highly Exposed (7 occupations, 70+) to Insulated (33 occupations, below 30). Mean AOI across the U.S. occupational landscape: 44.8.
The outcome
A citable reference tool for job seekers, researchers, and workforce planners - the kind of evidence base the AI-and-work debate usually lacks.
